When I moved to the U.S. I didn’t speak a word of English. Even though I was only 10 years old and it was easier for me to learn the English language because of my age, I still struggled because I felt lost and clueless and kids made fun of me and didn’t want to be friends with me. Sadly, these kids were all Hispanic like me, but they spoke perfect English. I stayed an outcast for the first year of school so all I did was read but I read only in English. I also watched TV in English only. That rejection gave me the strength to try harder to learn the language better and faster. I started befriending people who only spoke English to force myself to speak it. That was definitely the best move I ever made. I persevered so much that by the 8th month of my first year of school I was removed from ESL and became one of the best students in regular English classes. I became the best and fastest reader and won awards for spelling. I was even asked to read the programs in the school assemblies. What I went through encouraged me to help other people in my same situation, so I started teaching English and now I’m prepping students for the TOEFL who dream of studying in a U.S. university. Now I am the director of operations of the best TOEFL tutoring company in South Florida.
The purpose of the TOEFL iBT test is to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English. TOEFL iBT scores are primarily used as a measure of the ability of international students to use English in an academic environment.

Cuando me mudé a los EE. UU. No hablaba ni una palabra de inglés. A pesar de que sólo tenía 10 años y era más fácil para mí aprender el idioma inglés debido a mi edad, todavía luché porque me sentía perdida y despistada y los niños se burlaban de mí y no querían ser amigos míos. Tristemente, todos estos chicos eran hispanos como yo, pero hablaban inglés perfecto. Me quedé como una marginada durante el primer año de escuela, así que todo lo que hice fue leer, pero sólo leía en inglés. También veía televisión solo en inglés. Ese rechazo me dio la fuerza para esforzarme más por aprender el idioma mejor y más rápido. Empecé a hacerme amiga de gente que sólo hablaba inglés para obligarme a hablarlo. Perseveré tanto que para el octavo mes de mi primer año de escuela me retiraron de ESL y me convertí en una de las mejores estudiantes en clases regulares de inglés.
