Time Management 101

Lauren Lassiter

Improving time management skills can help you stay organized, reduce stress, and boost productivity. Here are some strategies to help:

1. Set Clear Goals

  • Break long-term goals into smaller, manageable tasks.

  • Use the SMART method (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) to set realistic goals.

  • Prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines.

2. Use a Planner or Digital Tools

  • Use a planner or a time management app (e.g., Google Calendar, Todoist) to track assignments, appointments, and deadlines.

  • Block out specific times for studying, personal activities, and breaks.

3. Create a To-Do List

  • Make a daily or weekly list of tasks.

  • Rank them by priority (e.g., urgent, important, non-urgent).

  • Check off completed tasks to create a sense of progress.

4. Break Tasks into Smaller Chunks

  • Breaking big tasks into smaller parts makes them less overwhelming and easier to accomplish.

  • Apply techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working for 25-minute intervals with short breaks.

5. Avoid Multitasking

  • Focus on one task at a time. Multitasking can reduce productivity and increase mistakes.

  • Complete tasks fully before moving on to the next.

6. Set Time Limits

  • Allocate a specific time for each task. Use timers to help you stay focused (e.g., work on a project for 45 minutes, then take a 10-minute break).

  • Avoid perfectionism by sticking to the time limit and not overworking on tasks.

7. Eliminate Distractions

  • Identify what distracts you (e.g., phone, social media) and minimize it during work hours.

  • Set up a dedicated workspace to improve focus.

8. Learn to Say No

  • Don’t take on more tasks than you can handle. Prioritize your commitments.

  • Politely decline additional responsibilities that might interfere with your current schedule.

9. Review and Reflect

  • At the end of each week, review what worked and what didn’t.

  • Adjust your strategy based on how well you managed your time.

10. Build in Breaks and Downtime

  • Schedule regular breaks to rest and recharge. Working nonstop can lead to burnout and decreased productivity.

  • Include time for personal hobbies and relaxation in your schedule.

11. Delegate When Possible

  • Don’t try to do everything yourself. If possible, delegate tasks to others or ask for help.

By applying these techniques and making small adjustments in your daily habits, you'll improve your time management skills and find a better balance in your busy schedule.
